More than 50% of professionals struggle with setting clear boundaries at work.
That’s what a study, published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, revealed.
What’s even more interesting is the reason why.
Fear of negative repercussions.
This is important.
Boundaries are the building blocks of your well-being and optimal performance, allowing you to feel at your best and give your best at work.
Essentially, it's about protecting your powers instead of handing them over to others.
If you’re like most of my clients, you care how others perceive you and strive to be supportive.
It’s important to understand that it's about the right balance.
It can go both ways, and some leaders fail to recognise this balance and rely heavily on authority and control, compromising empathy.
Others simply go with the flow, expecting their team or boss to set the boundaries for them - that never happens.
I’ve worked with countless leaders to help them step back so their teams could step up. It takes patience, consistency and practice.
People-pleasing is a dangerous trap because it's impossible. You can’t please everyone.
Same with micro-management; you can’t do it all either. Certainly not if you want to excel and thrive at work.
You are not being selfish by sharpening your boundaries. You're creating clarity and building trust - so people know what is accepted and what is not.
Poor boundaries and constant compromises can lead to burnout and a loss of meaning.
Here are 6 effective strategies for establishing firm boundaries:
💎 Clear communication. Be transparent and define the right expectations.
💎 Lead by example. Become your team’s role model, showing them you respect their boundaries so they can also respect yours.
💎 Focus on priorities. Focus on the key tasks that matter the most and delegate wisely.
💎 Be supportive. Maintain open communication with your team members or boss and provide help and support when necessary.
💎 Address any issues promptly. Swift action clearly demonstrates that boundaries should be respected. Otherwise, lack of respect becomes a habitual behaviour.
💎 Show consistency. No matter the context or the circumstances, you must uphold your boundaries. If you make any exceptions, explain why and ensure they remain exceptions.
Setting boundaries and respecting others’ boundaries is a critical component of effective leadership and helps maintain a healthy balance for you and your team.
